Your blind just broke: what to do in the first hour.
Stop pulling, take the load off the mechanism, make any hanging cord safe, then use the triage table to see whether this is a today job or a next-week job. Most Albury blind faults cost $60 to $180 to put right, and very few of them are real emergencies.
Stop pulling. If a roller blind chain has jammed or is skipping over the clutch, every extra tug chews the teeth and turns a $60 chain into a $180 mechanism swap. Take the weight off instead: support the tube with one hand, push it firmly toward the spring-pin end of the bracket, and drop the other end out. If a cord or chain is hanging in a loop anywhere a child under three can reach, cut the loop with scissors now and sort the tidy fix out later. If the glass behind the blind is broken, a glazier goes first and the blind is a separate, later job. If the fabric is soaked, unroll it fully and let it dry flat before it goes back up, or it will grow mould inside 48 hours.
The first hour, in order
- Make the cord safe. Loop the cord or chain up onto its cleat, or cut it. A cord pulled off its tension device is the one fault we treat as genuinely urgent, and it costs $25 to $60 to make compliant again.
- Take the load off. Lift the blind out of its brackets rather than forcing it. A roller blind sitting on the floor of the spare room is doing no further damage. A jammed one being wrestled with is.
- Isolate the power on a hardwired motor. If a hardwired motorised blind is running on and clicking, switch off the circuit at the board. Battery motors just need the battery unplugged at the head of the tube.
- Secure the window, not the blind. If the window itself will not close or the glass is broken, that is the emergency. A glazier board-up in Albury is roughly $180 to $350 after hours. The blind can wait days.
- Photograph it before you touch anything else. A wide shot of the room, a close-up of the fault, and a shot of the brand sticker on the end cap or bottom rail. That is what lets us bring the right part on the first visit instead of the second.
- Dry anything wet flat and unrolled. Blockout roller fabric has a coated back that traps water, and mould inside that coating cannot be cleaned out. It becomes a re-cover at $90 to $180 or a new blind at $140 to $280.

What makes the damage worse in the next ten minutes
Nearly every expensive blind repair we attend started as a cheap one and got made worse in the first ten minutes. These are the five things that do the damage.
- Yanking a skipping chain. The clutch is a plastic gear. When the chain skips, the teeth are already worn. Ten hard pulls will strip them and take the job from a $60 chain to a $180 mechanism.
- Dropping the blind from the top. Letting go of the chain and letting the blind free-fall slams the bottom rail into the sill and can bend a lightweight tube. That is a remake, not a repair.
- Rolling a wet blind up. Blockout fabric has a coating on the back. Rolled up wet, it grows mould between the layers within a couple of days, and the mould sits inside the coating where no cleaner reaches.
- Forcing a shutter panel closed. Timber shutters move slightly with the Albury humidity swing between a foggy July morning and a bone-dry January afternoon. Forcing a dragging panel splits the stile at the hinge, which is a new panel rather than a screw adjustment.
- Refixing a bracket in the same hole. If the plug has pulled out of plasterboard, the same hole will not hold. It needs a proper cavity anchor or a fixing into the timber reveal, and the second failure usually brings the plaster with it.
Safe to do yourself, and what is genuinely dangerous

Safe to do yourself: cutting a dangerous cord loop, lifting a roller blind out of its brackets, unplugging or charging a battery motor, replacing a bead chain and connector on a blind you can reach from a step ladder standing on a level floor, tightening a visible hinge screw on a shutter, popping a curtain glide back into a track, and drying a wet blind flat.
Not safe, and not worth it: anything above a stairwell or over a stair void, anything that needs a ladder on uneven ground or leaning against glass, dismantling a spring-loaded roller mechanism (they hold real stored energy and they take fingers), cutting into a hardwired motor circuit, and lifting a full-height plantation shutter panel down on your own. A basswood panel over a large opening is heavier and more awkward than it looks, and it is easy to drop it into the glass.
One more that catches people out: do not stand on a windowsill to reach a high blind. Older Central and East Albury homes have deep timber sills that look solid and are often just a lipped board over a cavity.

When it is honestly not an emergency
If the blind still covers the window, the cords are secured, the glass is intact and nobody is at risk, waiting for the next scheduled run through your suburb saves you $60 to $120 and gets you exactly the same repair. That covers most of what we are called about: a blind that will not hold position, fabric tracking sideways, a shutter louvre that flops, a motor that has run flat, a curtain off its glides.
Two more honest calls. First, if the blind is over ten years old and the fabric is already faded, spending $160 on a mechanism is throwing money at a product with months left in it. Replacement is $120 to $280 per window with a fresh warranty, so we will usually recommend that instead of the repair even though the repair is the smaller invoice. Second, if you have four or five tired blinds, do not pay four or five separate visit fees across a year. Book one measure, get the lot priced in a single written quote, and the visit fee disappears into the job.
What we do not do: glass replacement, security screens, external awning motors on commercial buildings, and repairs to flat-pack blinds that were bought in a standard size and cut down on site, because there is rarely a matching part to fit them. If that is what you have, we will say so rather than charge you to find out.
What to have ready when you book
A blind repair goes right on the first visit or it goes twice, and the difference is almost always information. Have these four things ready and we will bring the parts with us.
- The brand. Look on the end cap, the bottom rail, or the back of the bracket. Component brands matter, because clutch and bracket systems are not interchangeable between suppliers.
- The width, measured wall to wall across the brackets, in millimetres. Not the fabric width, the bracket width.
- The control side and chain drop. Left or right, and roughly how far the chain hangs down.
- Three photos. The whole window, the fault close up, and the mechanism end with the blind lifted slightly out if it is safe to do that.
If your blinds came with the house and you have no idea what they are, that is normal and it is fine. Send the photos anyway. Roller mechanisms fall into a small number of common families and the end cap shape usually gives it away.
